Mysterious Chassis Electrical Short 700 1987

I live in the Atlanta GA area and just had a new Volvo engine and turbo (approximately $8K) installed in my 1987 740 Turbo Wagon (just over 200K miles with immaculate body, interior etc.). Unfortunately, soon after this I experienced a mysterious electrical short (it burned up engine control module and when he shop installed the new one they watched the wiring melting on its way toward it and were able to save the module. However, the shop has had the car for 6 weeks trying to find the short through the laborious check-every-circuit method. The shop is very highly regarded and I have no reason to doubt its skill-much of the delay in finding the problem has been the shop's stated desire to avoid running up a huge diagnostic bill so they work on the car "when they can". Since my wife needs a reliable car, I am almost at the point of trying to sell the car for the cost of the engine/turbo (if I can even get that) in the hope of finding some handyperson who can track down the short and end up with a great car. Any suggestions out there?
