You probably found the source of the noise. The rubber does fatigue. You might try shimming up the carrier bearing and carrier with a couple of washers. Replacing the carrier bearing is something I have found requires more equipment than I have, namely a press. To get the drive line apart isn't that difficult. Might consult a manual on that if you havn't done it before.
