Okay, so I skimped a little and bought the non-metallic pads. But what kind of punishment is this? The brakes howled before I put on new pads, and they're still howling after the new pads. Sounds like 90% of the noise - it's LOUD, louder than a pad-on-piston, and embarassing - is coming from passenger side rear. With new pads, I slathered all moving parts with Disc Brake Quiet goo, except the pins and spring clip. But there's no smoking gun, no shiny metal-on-metal abrasions anywhere.
The sounds shows up first thing in the morning, as I'm pulling out of the garage, so it's not a heat issue. It's most prevalent when I'm using moderate pressure to come to a stop in city traffic, 45mph and below. I don't hear it at higher speeds, like slowing from highway speeds on an off ramp. Press very lightly, and nothing or almost nothing. Jam down hard like you're about to lock up, and nothing. But anywhere in between, and everybody within a 1000ft. radius turns to look for the noise that is surely an impending accident.
Two theories - 1.) I saw something about piston alignment with the rear shim (that's not present on my car anymore) in the FAQ. But, again, it's covered in goo to quiet it. 2.) I did NOT spring for new rotors, and mine's somewhat worn (I haven't miked it). I don't hear a tell-tale warp when I spin the wheel, but the caliper seems to be holding on a little too closely, and maybe some kind of funky harmonic thing is going on with the older grooves.
I'm open for any more theories or suggestions. Thanks in advance for any input.
