Flex plate installation 700 86

Well, my 740 is going to get some tranny work done (previous owner's neglect of the ZF finally caught up with it); while it is out, I'd like to address the worn teeth on the flexplate, so that I won't get that nasty screech when the starter teeth miss engaging (replacing the starter, too...).

So, the question is: can I rotate & remount the flexplate 60 or 90 degrees (depending on bolt pattern) from the original setting, or will this adversely affect engine balance?

I'd like to do this if possible, since I'm putting out quite a bit of cash for the tranny work; I'd rather not impact my beer budget any more than necessary by buying a new flexplate. If I have to buy a new one, I will, but I'd rather not spend money unnecessarily.

(Before anyone mentions it... I've been looking locally for a few months to find a good low-mileage AW-70 or -71 to swap in, to no avail.)
