It can be confusing. The clutch restoring running condition is interested. If you're familiar with where the fuel pump relay is locate it and resolder it and make sure it "clicks" when you turn the ignition to "on" position. Now I don't know what the names of the adjacent relays near the fuel pump relay (green) under the dash of my 84 there are two white relays. From each of these comes a wire that disappears through the firewall and runs along the inner fender and loops in my case (?) there is an unhooked ballast (??). This wire has a few inline connections that were creating enough interference to make my aging fuel pump quit and stall me out. I'd hit the clutch which would hit the wires and fix the short--unbelieveable but true.

I figured it out by jumping fuse terminal 5 and 7, take fuse 7 out while you jump it. Turn ingnition to on, this will make the intank and main pump run, you can hear the in-tank from the filler neck. Go under the dash and shake wires around and see if you can make the pumps quit. As well check the inline spade fuse along the driver's side inner fender, make sure it is clean.
