O/D Engaging Trouble? 200 1990

I was wondering if anyone had any help on this 1990 240dl wagon. Works fine except sometimes when I start it up the arrow on the dash stays lite when driving. O/D will not engage. I press the bottom on the shift to get it turn back on but does nothing. Then all of the sudden the arrow light on dash will go out (after a while) and I will have the extra gear O/D. The O/D bottom the shift seems to work fine when everything is normal. When I press it, it does downshift. And then when I hit to engage O/D it works.
