Key broken in ignition 700 88

I need some help with a broken key in my ignition. The bottom third somehow broke off down in the ignition lock and is impossible to retrieve. I decided all I could do was remove the whole ignition lock. I disassebled a number of hard to reach items including the shear bolts until I read in Haynes that at a certain point, I need to turn the key to position II to remove the lock. This presents a problem. I can't turn the key to remove the lock and I seem to need to remove it to get a new key/lock. Has anyone ever run across this and what the heck do you do to remove this unit. Any thoughts will be appreciated. Bruce A
