Sounds to me like you have a broken wire in your harness somewhere. Probably near a connector. Normally the sender in the dif. generates a voltage waveform that has a frequency in proportion to the speed. The sender also terminates/loads the cables so it isn't sensative to external signals.

If you have a broken wire at the right place in the harness, I can picture it acting like an antenna to pick up ignition pulses which would trigger the odomemter.
