distributor wiring 700 1987

I have B230FT engine in a 1987 760 Turbo. The distributor is located at the back of the engine between the valve cover and firewall. On the underside of the distributor three? wires enter the distributor body through a molded piece of plastic where the cap and body meet. It looks like the plasic should just slip into a slot on the top edge of the distributor body and be held there by the cap but I can't seem to get it to slip into the slot. Am I correct or is there supposed to be a retaining clip and screw that are missing?

I found the wires just hanging from the distributor while looking for a cracked distributor cap because of hard starting after rainy days. Instead I found the wires and molded plastic hanging out of the hole.
