M-46 Overdrive - What is that dohickey behind the solenoid? 700 1990

Folks, I was having a peak under my (new for me) 1990 740GLE 16V today to check out a shutter I get sometimes when I take off when the car is cold. Suspected the mounts or a seal leak onto the clutch. While I was there I spotted what looked like a recessed allen head bolt just to the rear of the OD solenoid on my M-46 tranny overdrive unit. I guess that is the filler plug. It had a decomposing red plastic cap over it. Right below that was a thin metal cap with a knurled base. The top of the cap looked like a broken off pipe! What the heck is that?
