temp guage climbing 200 79

Been a while since I posted a stupid question on this site. Guess I've been lucky?

My temp guage went real high, real quick tonight (almost to the red), leading me to believe it's a ground problem... the gas guage seemed a little high, too, for the amount I had just put in, but maybe I just got a good deal on gas (?). But neither needles were completely pegged. Is it possible it's ground or did my thermostat actually go? I hate the idea of overheating... Any ideas where I should check the wires first before I buy a new thermo?
