Had this exact problem with a 85 740.

I checked EVERYTHING. I replaced the fuse/relay holder, (it had molten-relay syndrom. Common on 740's), resoldered relays, plugs and various connectors nothing worked.

Turned out to be the CPU.

The give away was the numbers on this particular one. When I went to the other cars in back, none of them had the same numbers as the one I had but, when I went to check on prices & availablity on a new one, I noticed the computer I had was superceeded by another type as a replacement. (This sometimes means the old model had problems.)

I had a 240 with the same computer numbers as the replacement one would be and viola! No more strange stalling problems and has ran great ever since.

You may want to check and see if there is a different part # as a replacement than the one you have in it now.

If you could find one cheap at the yard or borrow one someplace, could be worth a try.
