oil pan gasket? 200 1990

my oil pan gasket has been leaking towards the rear where it comes together at the main bearing housing. I went today and bought a new gasket only to find out that the volvo oil pan gasket is made in three pieces. They come taped with masking tape at the joints to hold the whole thing together. I was wondering has anyone put one of these on and should i leave the tape? if i remove it should i use some sort of gasket maker on the joints? a volvo technician told me to do what ever i liked. He said that he left the tape. that just doesnt seem right since masking tape isnt a gasket. thanks for any help.
