Re: Long-term storage suggestions? 700 1991

I am not sure I agree with Evan on all his recommendations. I just went through this with my kids' two 940s: the kids are in England or Boston for the year and both cars are under wraps until next June.

Here's what I did:

-Find indoor storage. I found a farmer and a large machine shed.

-Buy a Carbag (www.carbag.com) for $220. This is a large ziplock bag that keeps the car hermetically sealed, free of moisture, rodents, etc. My cars are in a dirt floor barn, so this was critical. Mice wreak havoc inside a stored auto. You will also need a cheap car cover under the carbag.

-Change oil and filter. Now is the time to do regular maintenance that you will forget about in a year. Clean and treat the leather seats.

-Get the car washed, including the engine, add Sta-bil to the tank, and fill it with gas.

-Completely vacuum out the interior and get EVERY crumb of food, gum, etc. out of the seat tracks, pockets, etc.

-Let it dry for a day so no moisture is anywhere on the car

-Pull the plugs and spray marine fogging oil (KMart or Walmart) into the plug holes: this coats the cylinders and rings with oil. Reinstall plugs

-Put a few mothballs in the cabin.

-Pull the battery negative ground cable

-Pull the number one fuse in case someone fools around with the car while in storage.

-Lock the car and zip the carbag around it after throwing more mothballs under the car. You also place dessicant containers in the cabin to absorb moisture. The carbag can be locked.

Come back in a year and the car is in fantastic shape. The mothball smell disappears in a day.
