Howling noise from engine compartment 200 1992

My '92 240 has begun to make a moderate howling sound from the engine compartment within a minute of driving off when the engine is cold (or has been allowed to cool off a bit). It lasts about 20 seconds and then disappears and isn't affected by shifting the transmission into neutral. It sounds a bit like a wolf howling but doesn't affect engine performance.

Any ideas what this could be?
