almost certainly a broken anti-rattle spring! 700 90

Kind of a duh (rattle--ergo broken anti-rattle spring!) but there it is.

I had the same thing on my 90 with Axxis MetalMaster pads. Evidently someone gets a bad batch of wire when the pads are made up and they get out and fatigue. Could happen to stock volvo pads too!

Just replace the pads on the side with the rattle if you have relatively new pads (less than, say 5K miles on them). It is NOT normal for the pads to retract 1/4" from the disc...the pads retract a mm or less due to the square cross section of the seals..the seals tend to straighten when pressure is released and that retracts the piston/pads. If you have that much retraction you may well have a warped disc(s) that are wobbling the pads back like a dado blade.
