HELP-in the dark the lights went out 200 1980

i have not started trying to find the answer to this issue yet as it happened last night and i'm now at work. i'm looking for a place to start on this one and all of you do a great job...

yesterday was our first cold hard rain of the fall and my 1980 didn't want to start. my wife did want it to start and killed the battery in trying. so new plugs, cables, cap, rotor and a charged battery and we are back in action. i had at the same time been fixing the brakes...after all was finised i headed out for a test drive.

it was 11 at night and i live in the country, cruzing along a dear jumps in front of the car. slam on the break, swerve to the left and the dear lives on. right after this i do a shart turn to head home and while the wheel is cranked to the right the lights flicker. i get to a corner and make a right turn and the light go out. radio works and if i pull the brights lever they will stay on as long as the lever is pulled back. let go and all the lights go out, back ad front. when you pull the bright lever only the brights go on. so what next? any starting places would be great.

thank you
