One quick and dirty way of checking for vaccuum leaks is to spray WD-40 here and there. If you spray it on a vaccuum leak, the idle will change.

NOx is the result of high temperature (as N2 does not otherwise bond with O2) and is at the opposite end of the combustion spectrum from black smoke. Somewhere in the middle lies the magic balance of combustion waste products.
