Proper fan clutch functioning? 200 86

How is exactly is the fan clutch suppose to work on 240's?

Recall reading somewhere that if the clutch is good then the fan should cycle on and off every so many (30? 45?) seconds at a certain RPM (2500 maybe?). Sorry I'm being so vague here, but can't remember what it said word-for-word. Think I picked this up in Haynes.

The fan in my '86 245 appears to run constantly. Normal? If not, how much does a new fan clutch cost?
