Front Brakes - Pad Rattle 900 1993

Can anyone describe the function of the 'V' springs on the back of the brake pads on my Girling brakes?

AND

I discovered that there is a "shim" located between the pad and the caliper. This shim slots into the caliper, spans across to both the inner and outer pad. On my car, there was only one shim, located on the "top" of the pads. While I had it all apart, I "sprung" the shims about a millimeter and replace, but put them on the bottom of the pads (thinking that gravity is why they have been rattling).

Any ideas / thoughts?

Al Craig
