Automatic transmission problem 200 1985

My 240dl is fitted with an Aisan Warner 4 speed box. Recently the car will not pull away from stationary when in Drive or second. Put it into first and it pulls away fine and then i can change up into Drive and the transmission functions as normal. Reverse is fine. Have checked the fluid level and the kick-down cable. Any ideas as to the cause? I am happy to use the old dear as it is but are these symptoms the first sign of total failure?
