Don't let Don's disinformation fool you. Gasoline actually undergoes numerous chemical processes to make it as clean as possible. He also knows almost nothing about Volvos. Rico seems to give good advice though.

His idea about the bad fuel pressure regulator is a good one though. I'd check it out. That is basically one of two reasons far a gas smell unless there was severe backfiring through the intake.

The other reason could be: There is a vacuum line running from the TB to a charcoal canister type device under my car's ('83 245) bumper on the left side. If the canister decided to go full purge at shutoff, it'd possibly make said stench.
