knob removal question 200 83

How does one remove these knobs:

a) the knob that you use to turn your headlights on/off

b) the dimmer-switch knob for the instrument panel lights?

I need to remove the instrument panel (speedometer, tach, etc) to replace a burned out bulb back there, but if I try to pull the knobs straight out using only my hands, nothing happens. I want to make sure that I don't break them by trying to remove them incorrectly.

Do I just need to use more elbow grease to pull them straight out, or is there a trick or tool that is required?

Thanks!!

Susan.
