Slipping Clutch- Other causes? 200 84

Hey guys, I'm going to do clutch on my '84 242tic soon, but want a second opinion first. Being that the car has 290000km and presumably the original clutch, I'm pretty sure it just needs a new clutch, but there is one thing that is bothering me: The clutch pedal is really HIGH. ie to push it all the way to the floor is a LONG way, like, 8" i guess. Also, when the clutch slips, I don't get that weird burning smell like most clutches have when they slip. So I'm just wondering if the pedal is so poorly adjusted that it can't even make the clutch fully engage. Or is the clutch so worn that the pedal moves up that far before it even engages?

Thanks for any comments,

-Kenny
