Trick to getting intank pump out of 740 Wagon 700 91

Help! I've got to replace my intank pump on my 91 740 wagon. I got the panel open, the hoses off and the electrical connection undone and pulled back out through the access panel. Everthing is clear but I can't get the assembly out through the access panel. It's too long and the cylindrical level will not allow it to be taken straight up and out. Next I'm thinking of just dropping the tank to take it all apart but it doesn't make any sense that I can't get this thing out through the panel. What's the trick?

TIA!
