Do I really need a new FMI module??? 700 1991

For the past 2 months my 91 740 (225k) has had one of those nasty "engine cuts out when driving" problems. Intermittent, usually when cold & shortly after I ease up on the gas ie after a stop or downhill, never when in Park, power steering goes off, engine starts up again after waiting a few minutes. So far my dealer has replaced the air mass meter and the speed sensor, as suggested by error codes: total cost $900 (can.) but problem not solved. Fuel relay apparently ok. Now I'm told the error code reports a faulty FMI module and will also need to replace the ignition module at the same time: $2200 Can for new parts! Qu: is it possible to test the parts to see if that is the real cause? I no longer have much faith in the diagnostics! (and we're looking for used parts...)
