wierd humming/whining noise 200 1976

My 1976 245 is now making a loud whining/humming noise when the car is in motion. The faster the car is moving, the higher the pitch, however, the engine RPMs do not seem to make a difference (i can put it in neutral and it still makes the same noise, no change in pitch until i slow down). Does anyone have any idea what this could be?

also, does anyone know where i could find a used automatic 4 speed transmission (w/ or w/out OD)? Mine is a 3 speed. i got ripped off. or, if someone would be interested in trading a low mileage (116,000) 1976 245 with a new alternator, rerouted alt. wiring, and new master cylinder for brakes (car needs a tune up), for any kind of car with low mileage, at least a 4 speed tranny, and DEPENDABLE, please let me know. I do too much highway driving for a 3 speed...in fact, all i do is highway driving.

thanks,

Rachael
