Sludge/oil build-up in B230---indicates what??? 200 1983

Hey folks,

...looked at a '93 940 wagon, clean body, inside needs a little cleaning up, service records for all scheduled maintenance, all in all a good looking car, price: under $4500!...BUT.....I noticed when looking in the oil filler hole at the cam and surrounding area under the valve cover, there was some oil build up, like sludge...not a horrible amount, but quite noticeable. I have heard that this is an indication of short drives (i.e. not letting the engine warm up completely). Does anyone have any input on what this build up is an indication of? Also, does this necessarily mean that the engine will have decreased longevity. FYI...it seems that the oil was changed around every 4-5K miles, a bit more than I do myself, but I'm not sure what to conclude. Thanks in advance for your input.
