Correction-Headlights are out 700

Dave Lotman made a post last week which I answered incorrectly. I wish to correct my answer. My humble apologies to the brickboard.

Dave's question regarded a 700 series on which the headlights would only work on momentary high beam. He wanted to know if there is a headlight relay. I said there was not (wrong!)

There is a headlight relay, it is energized by the headlight switch. It is relay K (front row, second from left) and supplies electricity to the headlight function of the combination headlight/turn signal/hazard warning switch. The headlight function of this switch is strictly mechanical (I was right there!) and routes the electricity to the high beam fuses or the Lamp Failure Relay, then the Lamp Failure Relay, and then to the low beam fuses. On low beams the electricity goes in on pin 56b and out on pins 56bL and 56bR (I got that one right, too!). Now here is the catch, fuse 2 supplies electricity to terminal 30 of the combination switch for the sole purpose of allowing the high beams to be flashed when the headlight relay is not supplying electricity to the combination switch.

So, if you can only flash the high beams in you 700 series (the headlights wont' work in high or low beam), look for trouble in relay K, or the headlight switch which energizes it.

Yes, I am eating crow! But, I caught myself....
