Turbo Charger 700 1987

I own a 1987 760 turbo 4 cylinder automatic, and about a week ago the turbo indicator on the inside instrument panel stopped working. It holds at mid range. The car still seems to rum fine but the gas consumption seems to have increased. Also the car just failed to pass the NO part of its emission test. I would sincerely appreciate any suggestions. Are these problems related. Is the dash indicator an electrical, vacuum or wastegate problem? Is there a sensor i should be looking for? How do I check? Thanks
