My March '89 740 turbo auto with 164500 goes to the mechanic next week for two problems. Any advice you can give me first would be welcomed by him as well as me!
The ABS warning light on the dash has come on occasionally in the past, and stayed on until the ignition went off. The car could restart straight away and the light might stay off for days or weeks before coming on again. However, for the last 4 weeks it has been on all the time, lighting as soon as I start moving forward (doesn't light while I reverse out of my drive). Brakes work fine although ABS system has never (to my knowledge) been called into play. The last problem was, as suggested here, the fuel pump relay and as my mechanic isn't an electrical specialist he wondered if the fault here is something in the electrics rather than in the ABS itself? When he replaced the FP relay (on this board's advice!) he found a length of red wire folded up and tucked into the relay drawer, not apparently connected to anything but tested live as it must have been touching something else. He removed it but could it have caused anything else to fail?
Second, and probably unrelated: for a few days there has been a loud shuddering, rattling or knocking noise from the front right hand wheel area when the car is stationary with the foot brake on, when in "park" without the footbrake especially if facing downhill or on an incline so it leans to the right, and when cornering to the left. The car is right-hand drive. The front tyres, front brake hoses, discs and pads were replaced in June, 7500 miles ago. Rear pads are to be done this month. Any ideas what this could be?
