Fuel...the final frontier. 200 1986

Hi folks. In the UK the Shell company have released a new 95 RON unleaded called Optimax. According to the bumpf it's supposed to be the stuff that Schumey and Rubens use in their company cars. It costs about 5 pence a litre more than regular 95 RON unleaded. It's supposed to be a super high quality fuel with all sorts of perormance enhancing doo dahs and chemicals that cuddle and embrace your engine and treat it with love, whilst cleaning it gently at the same time. I'm normally very cynical about this kind of claim (winner of the 1999 UK Cynical Git award and runner up in the 2000 european Skepticism Trials) but I stuck 20 litres in Bjorn on Friday as an experiment. Once the fuel had had time to pump through I absolutely could not believe the enhancement to smoothness and queitness that I encountered. What was always a quiet unit is now silent at 60mph - road noise is apparent but not even the slightest hint of engine noise. The engine feels so smooth and throttle response feels vastly improved. I'm waiting to see how consumption is affected but, with all else that's happened, i'm hopeful. I don't work for Shell, I don't sell Shell products, but I think y'all should give it a try and see what you think (unless you have a diesel, or it turns out not to be available in the US). If Shell sold this at the price of 'normal' unleaded then I reckon most competitors would be out of business within a month.

Rich.
