Rust Death? 200 84

"Speaking of which, when is a car officially claimed by the rust (i.e. a goner)?? I recently purchased an 84 240 Diesel from my family with the hope of fixing it up and learning something at the same time. Now I now think this was foolish because of the deterioration of the floorpan. Sixteen New England winters in combination with >200 lbs. male drivers may have killed this car. When is enough enough for a poor novice car mechanic such as myself?

Oh and please don't bother to chastize me for having an interest in the VW Diesel engine. I've been running it on homemade corn based fuel as an experiment.
