loose wires, oil leaks, misc fun. 700 1989

I was digging around in my engine compartment (never a good idea) this weekend, and found a couple of things. First, I saw 2 white wires with red stripes in them. Both were disconnected and just sitting there resting on a frame rail behind the radiator. I followed them to their source and found that they're for the aux fan. Apparently they used to belong to the "fan thermo-switch" that went in-line with coolant tube coming from the water pump. My query is this: Is this detrimental to the car not to have this operating? I've been driving with it disconnected for a few months and haven't noticed any adverse effects. Is the aux fan used for the AC as well, or just cooling?

Second, I was tracking down the 3 nasty oil leaks I have, and after finding the gasket in the oil fill cap to be faulty, and the oil drain pipe from the turbo to the block being in need of a gasket, I was in search of the 3rd leak. I found the oil to be emminating from the drivers side of the block under the intake manifold, below the knock sensor and forward of the air control valve. It's a flat metal panel with 2 bolts connecting it to the block. Nothing is connected to it, it looks like there once was in earlier models.
