Engine quit and won't restart !??!

I have an '87 760 T/wagon. 125K miles. I just returned from a trip of 1500 miles. Ran great. This am I washed the mud off and was about to change the oil. I let it idle for about 15 minutes to warm up the oil. I shut it down then noticed more mud at the jacking points, so I restared it backed out of the garage and hosed off under the running boards. It suddenly stopped running. I left the ignition on and continued washing the mud off for 5 minutes or so. Car would not start. I am pretty sure I didn't get anything ignition wet. I have power to the coil, but no spark. I didn't pull the gas line, but can smell gas.

I checked all the fuses and tapped the relays. No joy. Any suggestions on the likely culprit? My wife is giving me that long suffering look and the kids too. Daddy broke the Volvo!

1) does long idling overheat something ignition?

2) does leaving the key on and engine off burn out anything? ( it used to be a no-no with points 'cause it'd burn the points)
