red wire from main relay to fuel pump relay gets hot!? 200 82

one more electrical question. i followed the red wire from the fuel pump relay under the dash to the little square relay on the side of the engine compartment on my 82 wagon. the red wire was getting so hot it started to melt the black wire connector its end went in at the fuel pump relay. could this be a bad main relay or pump relay or should i go and check the pump connections again? the fuel sending unit at the tank has always had the black wire connector broken off. the original owner put a wire with alligator clips connecting to the sending unit and the body of the car, i dont know if this is the problem or not?

thanks, will
