Strange course of electrical events. Please help. 200 80

So I put a brand new battery in the thing ('80 242 GT) and it starts up fine, I check it with the voltmeter, and the alt. seems to be charging as it reads around 14 volts, so I'm satisfied. BUT I never give it the gas. so I go start it for work this morning, it makes some unusual electrical sounds when the ignition is moved to the first position, which is a little weird, but I'm late, so i start it. there is an unusual whine like an electric motor, and when i go to give it the throttle, it wants to cut out and the radio light dims. in other words, it idles, but won't rev. a piece of important history is that this thing has an alternator from an audi that puts out more juice, but has my old regulator on it. pleeese help!!! My guess is the new battery surged the system, maybe blew the alt., and something else in the injection system. i will check the volts when it is idling ('coz that's all it will do) to see if anything is weird. anybody have any ideas of what might be up?

Thanks folks. You've always come through for me before, hope you can help me now.

Abe
