Re: Points Gap, Timing for '71 142S 140-160 1971

Let's assume you have a good running car that you just replaced all the plugs, points, wires, etc. in. Can't you just advance the timing by turning the distibutor until it starts to ping while driving, then back it off a bit to set it? Do you really have to pull out a timing light at all?

What direction do you turn the distributor to advance the timing (CW or CCW)? I have the Haynes Manual and it's not very good for basic tune-up info.
