I had the same problem. One way to check if it is the hall sensor is when the car wont start,get in and turn the key and watch the tach. you should see the needle bumping up and down slightly,if it doesn't move its most likely the hall sensor. My 740 had the same symptoms until eventually it wouldn't even start.
