I am very happy with my brick. Consider the punishment I force upon it, it holds up extremely well, certainly better than BMW's I've seen of similar vintage. At 360000km the engine runs perfectly without ever needing servicing (seals not included). The knocking you mention may be piston slap. This can only bother your ears, the engine doesn't mind it at all. Just replace joints when they are loose and bushings when they are worn. Nothing is forever.
