I did exactly what Steve is describing on my 1993 940 manual stickshift.

Usually these switches are not the cause of these problems.

Taking out the console is not difficult and gives you a good insight inside the innarts.

I found one of the two wires broken at the spot where they came out of the

shifter. I cut the wire, took off some of the wire insulation on both sides and soldered in an extra piece of simular wire for strecht prevention and insulated the repair with crimping insulation. Has been working ever since.

Now i have to repeate the same procedure on my 1983 760 automatic.
