new 740 owner needs some advice 700 1990

Unexpectedly, I have become a Volvo owner. An out-of-state driver had his 740 GLE break down near my home. Rather than having it hauled back to his home 500 miles away, he offered it to me for the price of the new tires on it ($300). Believing that this couldn't be too much of a gamble for me, I took him up on the offer. After speaking with the service department at the nearest Volvo dealer (180 miles away), I now realize that this car will no doubt require some major engine work. It has the 16 valve DOHC engine, and the timing belt is broken. My understanding is that this event always does major damage to head components, sometimes to the pistons/cylinders as well. I'm considering removal of the head by myself to see the extent of the damages. If it is limited to the head, I will go ahead and have repairs done. If the damage is also to the pistons/block, then it might be best to haul the vehicle to the salvage yard and hope to recoup my investment. Not having a service manual for this car, I thought I'd post a question to this list to hopefully elicit a pointer or two before I decide to dive into this. Is head removal fairly straight forward, or are there some precautions to take when working on this engine? I don't want to inadvertantly do any more damage than had already been done. The rest of the car is in very good condition, so junking it doesn't seem like the morally correct action either. Any advice that those of you who have experience with this engine can offer is very much appreciated!
