Valve Lifters on 740 700 90

I have a 740 Turbo - B23FT engine which seems to have a lot of lifter noise, especially at low engine speeds. I'm not sure if I have hydralic lifters or shimmed lifters but I have had the head off and found nothing that looked like a shim. The valve lifter tops appeared to be cups about as deep as they are round without any hint of a hydralic mechanism. I suspect that the lifters need some attention based on the intermittent clacking noise. How can I tell if I have hydralic lifters or not? I've looked at the archives and read much about adjusting the shimmed lifters. Any other advice?
