Valve Clearance Check on 2.3 non-turbo 900 93

Greetings brick-masters!

My 940 runs great at 147k and I have never checked valve clearances. All this business of playing with shims sounds screwy to me. My last 81' 240 with a similar power plant ran great to 240k, until I sold it.

1) Am I missing something important here?

2) Is it possible to buy a set of shims, or an assortment of sizes, that I might need to check and adjust mine?

3) How do YOU do it?

I am afraid I am tempting fate here..........
