seat belt retraction (overly hard to release) easy to fix: Thanks Brickbd.!! 200 '86 rustbucket

Thanks for the info on getting my seatbelts to come out of their spools easier. A Brickbd. contributor, I forget exactly his name (asian name: Chang? i think) gave us valuable info on how to fix those older seat belt retraction spools to more easily release. My rear ones were so hard for the kids to pull out.... They had to go REAL SLOW to get them out and it took about a minute plus to get the kids buckled. Probably the front ones were replaced with the usual overcharging by dealers/??

I hear this is a real problem with 10 yr. old plus Volvo seatbelts.

The simple solution was to unscrew the spool (plastic black cylinder) with it's mount from the body. Then unscrew the bigger, bulkier end of the cylinder with two phillips head screws. Keep end up, leave spiral gear in spool, observe sheetmetal gear cog which is on sheetmetal face of gravity balance mechanism in said larger cap of spool, leaving it in the case and mildly tweek the rather insubstantial sheet metal cog (or catch) with a needle nose plier so that it doesn't stick out so far (into spiral gear face....) A very mild bending over the years from it's original straightness caused the constant grabbing. Now after bending back to it's original staightness, this thin, thin metal catch (cog?) still works like original, but without rude catching. Just like brand new....

and I thought i'd. have to buy new or used ones to replace.

For two seatbelts it took maybe 15 minutes max!!!

and also anybody what happened to my recent posts about fiberglass and sheetmetal work.... was my use of a very, very mild vularism a reason to ban it??? whew, maybe use of epoxy and fiberglass and 'bondo' is the real Vulgarism???
