My '84 (b23) threw a rod at 243,000 miles. It was a well maintained car. Oil changed every 3,000mi (Castrol 10w30, Mann/Volvo filters) and all other maintenance done on time. My '86 (b230f) is currently at 184,000 and shows no signs of trouble.

Some people claim to get 300,000+ miles out of these motors, but I've never personally seen a car with that kind of mileage that had the original motor. The '84 was getting old and slow in the last months of its life. It just didn't have the "pep" that it used to have, probably low compression.

But what the hell, a quarter of a million miles (almost) is nothing to complain about....
