You can actually remove the entire cluster in the '89 240's if you remove the center cover of the steering wheel (the same area where the horn is).

Just lower the windshield wiper lever all the way and you are set.

Supposedly my friend said that he had enough room in his fiancee's 1987 244 that he didn't have to do the above.
