Tune Up/Weber questions for new (old) 144 140-160 1970

I finally found my dream car, a rust-free 1970 144 Automatic. Just picked it up last week and will be using my old Standard 144 for parts.

I'll see if I can post some pictures of my new 144 soon. It's dark blue (very oxidized, I'll be spending the next few weeks buffing it out), has the original B20B engine with Weber Carb and a rebuilt automatic. It runs well and doesn't smoke at all (must have had head work somewhere along the line), even with 155K on it. The Weber carb seems to work really well, it's hard to say if outperforms my dual carb car, but I bet it would.

I ran into a bit of a brick wall when tuning it up. I replaced all the tune up parts (wires, plugs, airfilter, etc.), but when I went to set the timing a strange thing happened. I moved the distibutor CW to advance the timing, trying to get the car to ping, and as I advanced it, the car ran smoother, better and the idle increased (which is good), but the bad thing was, after I advanced the timing I had a tough time restarting the car. When I cranked it, it hesitated and just wouldn't kick over. I retarded the timing a bit (turning the dist CCW) and the car started fine. Any ideas why advancing the timing a bit would cause the car not to start? The other problem is, the idle is now too high with the timing advanced and the idle screw on the Weber is backed off the cam as far as it will go. Does this mean the jets in the carb are wrong? Can anyone explain how to properly adjust one of these Weber carbs (or direct me to a webpage that has this info)? The linkage and choke are adjusted fine, I checked. The only thing I didn't touch was the points. Any ideas?
