Vacuum gauge--- Is that a good accessory??? 200 '86 rustbucket

my middle aged Volvo-- 160k miles -- is fairly in good shape according to the two qualified mechanics that have looked at it with only new sparkplugs added to get "in tune" by their examination... But I am not satisfied: my MPG varies between 20 and 24 mpg.. but lately with more pep due to the good sparkplugs hasn't offset lower mpg and occasional rough idle and an annoying front end noise (my waterpumps been checked twice and they don't think anything's wrong.

They say my engine's good, but I am still wanting more. I read in a book where the author who was addressing getting many more miles out of a vehicle, that in his estimation a vacuum gauge is the best accessory for the dash to see if your engine is running it's best.

However, my Volvo handbook says a vacuum gauge isn't offered, just a clock and some other doo-hickey.

Does anyone else out there advocate having a permanent vacuum gauge on the dash as an accessory and how is it installed???

I tend to think that even the best professional mechanics tend to 'ignore' details on the older vehicle if they think the owner is only planning on keeping it going for a couple of years and then dumping it.
