I have a 1991 740 and the ignition switch has a tendency to want to remain in the "start" position sometimes. Perhaps yours is doing the same thing.

You need to determine if it was in fact a starter motor that was staying engaged even though the switch had returned to the normal "on" position or was it actually remaining in the start position because of a malfunctioning ignition switch.
